Maharashtra Pilots Reflective Cooling Trees Along Highways

The Maharashtra PWD has installed structural “cool tree” canopies—metal pole networks with reflective reflective roofs—along the Pune–Mumbai highway. These mimic shade-providing trees and cool adjacent roads via reflective insulation. Embedded mist-sprays further reduce temperatures. Tested over 2 km, the cooling trees decreased surface heat by 15°C, making roadside stops more comfortable. Sensors also transmit data on heat stress to road safety authorities. The plan includes 20 km deployment across expressways to combat urban heat.
